Grading is a specialist service within the Human Resources Division. The University assesses the content of roles using the HERA (Higher Education Role Analysis) Job Evaluation scheme in order to assign a grade. The service provides support and guidance on the creation of new roles, and the review of existing roles. The webpages can be only accessed by current staff members using Raven access.

Creating a new role
There are a number of ways a new role can be created. You can:
- clone an existing role from within your Department (through RAS)
- create a role that matches, or is based on the Role Template Library
- create a role that is not based on an existing role, or in the Role Template Library
Role Template Library
The University has a range of pre-populated Role Templates covering administrative, technical, manual and specialist roles for institutions to use when creating a new role, or revising the content of an existing role. These are stored in the Role Template Library.
When writing a new role, or amending an existing role, you should always check whether there is a suitable template in the Role Template library. The library is always being updated, so please check it before starting each grading request.
All new grading requests will be processed and graded as per the normal grading process.

Changing the content of an existing role
There is a different process depending on whether the role is filled or vacant (or will soon become vacant). The following pages cover the review of roles where the Department wants to change only the content of a role (not the grade), and where the Department wants to amend the both the content and grade of a role.
