Once the key duties and responsibilities of the activity are determined, one of the required actions must be to identify which checks, if any, are required prior to the individual working with children and/or vulnerable adults.

In addition, the department/institution must consider if any required checks should be treated as essential before employment (that is, that the new employee recruited to the role should not be able to start work until the check is completed).
