Staff review and development (appraisal)

Once a member of staff has successfully completed their probation period, their performance and development should be reviewed using the University's Staff Review and Development Scheme.

Day-to-day management

All members of staff should receive regular feedback and advice (as necessary). The principles to adopt are:

  • To give positive feedback as well as information about what may not be going well
  • To be alert to picking up any problems at an early stage
  • To keep staff well informed about their progress and prospects

Where the head of an institution delegates these duties he or she should ensure that all line managers, including principle investigators, are aware of what needs to be done and are given appropriate support and, where necessary, training to allow them to undertake these tasks.
