Introduction of the University’s Sickness Absence Policy with effect from 1st April 2014

The University is introducing a Sickness Absence Policy to provide a clear framework for reporting and recording sickness absence and promoting a supportive and effective approach to managing sickness absence in a fair and consistent way.  It aims to maximise attendance while recognising that there are occasions when employees may be unable to attend work due to ill-health.  It outlines the process employees should follow in the event that they are absent from the workplace due to ill-health.

The structure of the policy mirrors the Capability Policy, with a focus on informal interventions to ensure that employees receive the support they need at the earliest opportunity.

The policy comes into force on 1st April 2014 and is applicable to all University employees, albeit the relevant Statutes and Ordinances should also be followed for University Officers. The policy will be available on the Policies and procedures section of the HR website from 1st April 2014.

For University employees, the current disciplinary procedures will cease to be used to address concerns regarding sickness absence from 1st April 2014 but will continue to be the mechanism for addressing cases of misconduct.

Under the new policy, sickness absence recording will now include half-days.  From 1st April 2014 please therefore ensure that you use the revised Self-Certification Form (CHRIS 62) that will be available on the Forms and templates section of the HR website from 1st April 2014.

If you have any questions about the policy please contact your relevant HR School Team or your Departmental Administrator or equivalent.
