1. Process
You will receive information about specific assignment offers via email from CCWS.
Some emails for temporary work will come directly to you, so there will be no need for you to physically do anything to accept the work. If you do not wish, or are unable, to carry out the assignment offer then please contact the department directly so that they may find someone else to complete this work.
Other emails require you to confirm your availability and interest in a temporary assignment, so you will see the options of “accept/reject” in your email. If you are selected for the assignment you will receive confirmation of this via an email from CCWS.
Once the offer is made/confirmed the email you receive will constitute a ‘Workers Agreement’ between you and the University and will contain the job information and the Standard Terms and Conditions of working at the University of Cambridge. All emails you receive from CCWS will be sent from the email noreply@casual.workers.admin.cam.ac.uk.
If you have any queries related to your booking/s please contact the department directly that has invited you to work – their details should be available on the booking email but if you are unable to find a point of contact please contact casual.workers@admin.cam.ac.uk for assistance.
2. Hours of work
Working hours will vary from assignment to assignment and will be agreed between you and the Institution in which you are working.
At the University, individuals usually take a one-hour unpaid lunch break. As a minimum, you must ensure that you take an uninterrupted rest break of at least twenty minutes for every six hours worked. You should discuss when rest breaks are to be taken with your line manager.
3. Maximum hours of work
CCWS has a maximum weekly booking limit of 48 hours built into the system. This means that the maximum hours you can be booked for each week is 48 hours.
You can choose to work more than 48 hours a week by selecting “yes” to the question “Would you like to opt out of the maximum 48 hour working week?” in the “Preferences” tile in your profile in CCWS.
Please note that you will be unable to do this if you have a visa with limits on your working hours.
4. Availability for work
You can use CCWS to record the times you are available or not available for work. Please see the CCWS User Guide on How to Record your Availability in CCWS for more information.
If you are no longer able to complete a temporary assignment please contact the department who has invited you to work (not the central Casual Worker HR Team) so that they may source a replacement.
If you are unable to work due to sickness, and have a sickness period that lasts for 4 or more days you may be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay. Please fill out a Self-certification Form and send it to your institution.
If you would like to claim Statutory Sick Pay and you have been unwell for a period of 7 days or over, you must submit a Statement of Fitness for Work (a Doctor's Certificate) to your institution.
Entitlement to Statutory Sick Pay depends upon your length of service, how much you have earned and your length of sickness absence. If you satisfy the qualifying conditions laid down by law, you will be entitled to receive statutory sick pay at the prevailing rate.
