The Home Office is introducing a digital proof of immigration status called an eVisa, which replaces physical immigration documents. This eVisa, also known as an 'online status' or a 'share code', will be available for non-UK nationals who hold either a biometric residence permit (BRP) expiring on December 31, 2024, or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) without a BRP, but with evidence of ILR via an ink stamp or vignette inside their passport.

To access the eVisa, individuals must create a free UKVI online account using the following link: www.gov.uk/evisa. Creating a UKVI account is straightforward and does not require sending documents to the Home Office. Failing to create a UKVI account may lead to unnecessary delays when proving immigration status.

Employers do not need to recheck the immigration status of employees who have already proved their right to work using a share code, unless their status is expiring soon.

For any BRP holder whose immigration leave expires before December 31, 2024, they should seek to extend their visa as usual, and an eVisa will be automatically created for them upon visa renewal.

If you encounter any issues while creating your eVisa, the Home Office offers a dedicated webchat service to assist with all queries at the following link: https://ukimmigration-support-webchat.homeoffice.gov.uk/evisa.
