This page provides a summary of the Paternity/Co-parent Leave Policy. For full details, please refer to the complete Policy on the Paternity/Co-parent Leave Policy page.

What is this Policy about?

This Policy details the entitlement to paternity/co-parent leave and pay available to employees.  This applies to a parent that is not taking maternity/adoption leave.

Who is this Policy for?

All University employees.

What do I need to know?

Leave available

Employees can take up to 12 weeks of paternity/co-parent leave.

Pay available

Employees receive full pay during paternity/co-parent leave i.e. statutory paternity pay is enhanced to full pay. Enhanced pay is paid on the condition that the employee returns to work for the University for 3 months following paternity/co-parent leave.

Taking leave

Employees can take their paternity/co-parenting leave in either one block of up to 12 weeks or two separate blocks.  An employee needs to take their paternity/co-parent leave within 1 year of their child’s birth or placement for adoption.  Paternity/co-parent leave needs to be taken before any shared parental leave the employee intends to take.

Notification procedure

Employees need to speak to their manager about when they want to take paternity/co-parent leave and complete a Paternity/Co-Parent Leave Application (CHRIS/65).

The Paternity/Co-Parent Leave Policy specifies how much notice the employee must give.

Employees will be able to take the first 2 weeks of paternity/co-parent leave on the dates requested. They need to agree with their manager when they will take the other 10 weeks' leave.

Neonatal care leave

If an employee has a baby born that receives neonatal care for 7 days or more in the first 28 days following birth they will be entitled to take neonatal care leave in addition to paternity/co-parent leave.  See the neonatal care leave section of the Special Leave Policy for details.
