This page provides a summary of the Smokefree Policy. For full details, please refer to the complete Policy on the Smokefree Policy page.

What is this Policy about?

This Policy details how the University protects anyone in University buildings from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.  It covers the use of all types of burnt and smoked products including cigarettes, tobacco and non-tobacco cigarette products. It also applies to e-cigarettes and vapes.

Who is this Policy for?

  • Staff
  • Students
  • Consultants, contractors and visitors

What do I need to know?

Smoking is prohibited throughout all enclosed and substantially enclosed University workplaces and University vehicles, with no exceptions.

Staff, students and visitors are only permitted to smoke in unenclosed designated areas.

Smokers are asked to refrain from smoking at entrances and exits to buildings or near open windows or air handling units.

Smoking may be permitted on University land.  Bins that are provided for the disposal of waste smoking materials must be used.

Staff who wish to smoke during the working day may do so during normal work breaks, in accordance with local arrangements.

Employees are expected to inform temporary staff, students and visitors of this Policy. However, employees are not expected to get into a confrontation that may put their personal safety at risk.

The Policy gives details of the approach that applies to those working on non-University sites and for tenants of University properties.
