Type of Leave Stipend Normally Payable Conditions
Sabbatical Leave
(Statute C1 and Special Ordinance C (i) 1,
Form CHRIS/67
According to the rules for payment of stipend whilst on leave under Special Ordinance C(i) — normally accrued at rate of one term in six (see Notice in General Regulations for University Officers, Statutes and Ordinances, Chapter XI) Holders of offices in Schedule C(i) or equivalent eligible; The leave must be used for study — no teaching, admin or examining; Expect to be asked for details of proposed research and a report on outcome; Faculty Board must support request.
Leave for academic purposes
(Special Ordinance C (i) 2 (b), Form CHRIS/67
Normally unpaid, on condition that the officer is receiving salary from alternative source.
The savings from the officer's stipend would be placed in a departmental account to be used at the Head of Department's discretion, primarily to cover replacement costs for the officer.
[An officer may remain on the payroll where a Research Council or other funding body provides reimbursement of stipend costs or cost of replacement cover]
No additional cost to the University — salary costs met by another source; Faculty Board must support request; Full academic case required.
Secondment leave
(Special Ordinance C (i) 2 (b), Form CHRIS/67
Normally unpaid, on condition that the officer is receiving salary from alternative source.
The savings from the officer's stipend would be placed in a departmental account to be used at the Head of Department's discretion, primarily to cover replacement costs for the officer.
At request of another institution for administrative or organisational reasons; No additional cost to the University — salary costs met by another source; Faculty Board must support request; Sabbatical leave entitlement is retained
Short leave   To cover work-related absences during Full Term for conferences, etc.
2–14 days In full May be authorised by head of institution.
15–28 days In full Must be authorised by Human Resources Division, on behalf of General Board and with approval of Faculty Board.
Leave to work away from Cambridge In full To cover periods spent away from Cambridge because primary work site is another geographical location e.g. observatory, field work; Faculty Board must support request.
Additional leave
(Special Ordinance C (i) 2 (b), Form CHRIS/67
On same terms as Sabbatical leave (one term for 2 or more continuous years in office; two terms for 3 or more terms; three terms for 4 or more years in office) For Heads of academic institutions and academic Chairmen or Secretaries of Faculty Boards not organised into Departments; Faculty Board must support request; Full academic case required.
